Worldly Vistas: Tallinn

Tallinn, Estonia

Tallinn
Photographed in Estonia

Located on the Baltic Sea, Estonia’s capital retains its walled and cobblestoned Old Town. From up on the hill, it looks like a fairytale town, with its 15th century towers standing guard. At ground level, there are quaint streets with cafes, shops, old churches and the Gothic town hall.

Tallinn is the oldest capital on the Baltic. And, although part of the former USSR, it maintained its unique heritage. The Old Town is a UNESCO-protected site.

Europe: Ancient Greece

Erechtheion

Erechtheion’s “Porch of the Maiden’s”

Photographed in Greece

The Erechtheion was an ancient Greek temple on the north side of the Acropolis dedicated to both Athena and Poseidon. It was built between 421 and 406 BCE.

There is a porch on the north side of the Erechtheion. And, on its south, the famous “Porch of the Maidens”, stand six draped female figures (caryatids) as supporting columns. One of those original six figures, removed by Lord Elgin in the early 19th century, is now in the British Museum. The Acropolis Museum holds the other five figures, and the ones on the site are actually replicas.

Europe: Swans

Swans

Swans
Photographed in Sweden

Swans are among the largest flying birds. Graceful on the water and beautiful to watch…just don’t get too close! These birds will attack when threatened. I’ve been chased by more than one swan in my quest to photograph these and other members of their species.

Dubrovnik, Croatia

Dubrovnik
Photographed in Croatia

A UNESCO World Heritage Site on the Dalmatian coast, the old city of Dubrovnik became an important Mediterranean sea power from the 13th century onwards. Although it was severely damaged by an earthquake in 1667, the city managed to preserve its beautiful Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque churches, monasteries, palaces and fountains. Armed conflict damaged the city again in the 1990s, it is now undergoing a major restoration program.
