Caribbean: French Angelfish

French Angelfish

French Angelfish

It’s hard to believe but this beautiful fish starts out jet black with four bright yellow stripes, standing out like a bumble bee. As they grow, they metamorphosize into attractive adults with gold tipped scales covering the bodies and this distinctive face.

French angelfish, common throughout the Caribbean, have long been among my favorite underwater models. They will swim right up, acting curious and maybe a bit cautious. But, they stay around and that makes for wonderful photo ops!

Flying gurnards are found in the tropical warm temperate waters on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean.
Although they are actually bottom dwellers, they able to glide above the water for short distances on their outspread pectoral fins, which is why they are referrred to as “flying.”
